FAQ

Is Your Leather Ready for Recoloring?

Before applying the Leather Recoloring Balm, your leather needs to be absorbent. Here’s how to check:

Step 1: Do the Water Test

Place a few small droplets of water on an undamaged area of the leather.

If the water absorbs into the leather and the surface darkens, your leather is absorbent.

This means the original factory finish has worn away or was never applied. You’re ready to use the balm.

If the water sits on top of the leather, your leather is non absorbent.

This is completely normal and means the original protective finish is still present.

Step 2: Preparing Non Absorbent Leather

If the water does not absorb, simply clean the surface using a gentle saddle soap to remove the existing finish and open the leather’s pores.

This safe, non chemical step allows the balm to absorb properly and ensures even, natural looking results.

Once the leather becomes absorbent, you’re ready to apply the Leather Recoloring Balm.

Our 4-Step Leather Recoloring Process

A proven, easy-to-follow system for restoring faded and worn leather.

This process has been refined through extensive testing and real customer results to deliver natural-looking, long-lasting restoration when followed correctly.

Please follow each step as directed to ensure the best outcome.

STEP 1: Clean Your Leather

Begin by cleaning the leather surface using a gentle saddle soap and a soft cloth.

This removes surface buildup, dirt, and residues from the leather, allowing the balm to absorb evenly and perform as intended.

STEP 2: Test for Absorbency

Before applying the balm, perform a quick absorbency test.

Place a few small drops of water on an undamaged area of the leather:

If the water absorbs and the leather darkens, the surface is ready for recoloring.

If the water beads on the surface, the leather is non-absorbent and requires additional cleaning with saddle soap to remove the remaining factory finish.

Once the leather absorbs water, it’s ready for the balm.

STEP 3: Apply the Recoloring Balm

Apply a small amount of Leather Recoloring Balm using a sponge or cloth.

Massage the balm into the leather using thin, even layers. Allow the leather to fully absorb and dry between applications. Build color gradually for the most natural results.

Once the desired color is achieved and the balm has fully cured, additional layers are no longer necessary.

STEP 4: Condition & Seal the Leather

After the recoloring balm has cured, apply a light layer of Furniture Salve.

This final step:

Seals in the restored color

Helps prevent color transfer

Restores softness and suppleness

Extends the life of the leather

Buff gently to finish and reveal a smooth, natural appearance.

Description

The leather you invested in years ago now shows scratches, wear, and fading. Replacing it feels wasteful, but restoring it usually means expensive dyes, messy paints, or professional repairs that cost more than they’re worth.

That’s why we created our Leather Recoloring Balm.

Instead of harsh chemicals or paint-like coatings, this balm restores faded color while conditioning the leather at the same time. It helps reduce the appearance of scratches, revives dry surfaces, and leaves leather soft and natural looking, not stiff or shiny.

Designed for furniture, car interiors, shoes, jackets, bags, saddles, and more, it’s an easy way to bring worn leather back to life without replacing it.

Color Chart

Use our color swatches to help color match! If your leather is not an exact match, don't worry. You have a few options:

  • You can mix colors to achieve a more complex color profile

Mix your desired color using this tool:

  • You can increase or decrease amount of balm applied to surface

Darker colors are achieved by applying more coats

  • Lighter colors are achieved by applying less coats
  • Color swatches are paired with HEX color codes for standardization.

Will the balm stain my clothing or rub off?

When applied correctly and allowed to fully dry, Snauff Leather Recoloring Balm does not rub off or transfer.

The balm is designed to blend into absorbent leather rather than sit on top like paint. For best results, apply thin layers, allow proper drying time, and avoid use before the surface feels completely dry to the touch.

How long does it take to dry and cure?

The balm begins bonding with the leather shortly after application.

We recommend allowing up to 24 hours before regular use to ensure the surface is fully dry and settled. Very dry or highly absorbent leather may benefit from slightly longer drying times between layers.

Can colors be mixed?

Yes. Snauff Leather Recoloring Balm colors can be mixed to achieve a closer or custom shade.

To help visualize color combinations before mixing, you can use this online color mixer:

https://trycolors.com/mixer

We always recommend testing your mixed color on a small hidden area first before applying it to the full surface.

Can I change the color of my leather?

Snauff Leather Recoloring Balm is designed primarily to restore and deepen existing leather color, but it can be used to shift color on smaller leather items if desired.

For small projects such as boots, shoes, purses, or accessories, applying 1 to 3 thin layers can help achieve a noticeable color change. Always allow each layer to dry fully before applying the next.

For larger surfaces like sofas, car seats, or chairs, the balm works best for refreshing and evening out the original color rather than completely changing it. Significant color changes on large surfaces may require many layers and results will vary depending on leather type and absorbency.

We always recommend testing on a small hidden area first to understand how your leather responds.

How does Snauff Leather Recoloring Balm work?

Snauff Leather Recoloring Balm is a gradual restoration product, not a paint or acrylic coating.

It blends into worn, absorbent leather to restore color while preserving the leather’s natural feel. Because leather varies, we always recommend testing first to understand how your specific surface responds.

Is the balm safe to use?

Yes. Snauff Leather Recoloring Balm is non-toxic and leather-safe when used as directed.

It contains no harsh solvents, corrosive materials, or flammable ingredients. Avoid contact with eyes, do not ingest, and keep out of reach of children.

What if I’m nervous to try it on expensive leather?

That’s completely normal. Most customers start by testing a small hidden area first to see how their leather responds.

Every order is protected by our 60 day money-back guarantee, so you can try it with confidence.

Unlike leather paint, the balm blends gradually into absorbent leather instead of forming a hard surface layer.

How To Use, Step By Step

Clean The Leather

Start by removing dirt, oils, and buildup from the surface.

A clean surface allows the balm to blend more evenly into the leather and helps prevent uneven results. Make sure the leather is completely dry before moving on.

Prepare the Surface

Place a few droplets of water on the surface of the leather, preferably somewhere that has no damage. If the water is absorbed into the leather, and the color of the leather surface darkens, this means your leather is absorbent. This means the manufacturer's original leather finish has worn off or was never applied.

If the water sits on top of the surface of the leather, this means your leather is non-absorbent. There’s nothing to worry; this is normal. This means that the manufacturer's leather finish is still coating your leather. You just need to strip the manufacturer's finish using a leather deglazer.

Fill Imperfections (If Needed)

For deeper cracks, scratches, or small holes, apply Snauff Leather Filler to level the surface before recoloring.

Use a spatula or soft applicator to apply a thin, even layer only to the damaged area. Allow it to dry fully, then lightly smooth if needed. Multiple thin layers may be applied for deeper imperfections, allowing each layer to dry completely before adding the next.

Once the surface feels smooth and even, you’re ready to continue with recoloring.

Apply & Build Color Gradually

Apply a thin layer of Snauff Leather Recoloring Balm using a soft cloth or sponge.

Allow each layer to dry fully before applying additional layers. Build color slowly until the desired result is reached. Thin layers help maintain a natural look and feel.

Condition & Protect

After recoloring, apply Snauff Mink Oil to nourish and protect the leather.

Massage a small amount into the surface using a soft cloth. This helps restore moisture, maintain flexibility, and protect the leather while leaving a natural, soft finish. Never greasy or sticky.

Allow the conditioner to absorb fully before regular use.
